The Story Behind The Pumpkin Spice Gin Sour
Fall is officially here, and so are the pumpkins. This means pumpkin-spiced lattes, pumpkin beers, and yes, pumpkin cocktails.
One of my favorite tips for a home bartender is to use what you already have in your liquor cabinet to make your own creative concoction. Not only is this fun, but it helps you to use ingredients and flavors that you may’ve never thought of using before. Sure, this type of experimentation involves a lot of trial and error, but if you use ingredients that complement your spirit, you have nothing to lose.
For this cocktail I took my own advice and added pumpkin butter to a classic gin sour. I bought pumpkin butter as a new fall flavor that I wanted to try on my morning toast; after trying it once for breakfast, I knew it had to be used in a cocktail, as it features amazing spices that would add depth to a drink with just a spoonful. The ingredients in the pumpkin butter include pumpkin, sugar, honey, lemon juice, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg, all of which are perfect inclusions for a fall cocktail.
I happen to have a serious obsession with the seasonal products from Trader Joe’s, and I think a lot of them are perfect for cocktails even though that’s not necessarily they’re intended use. This pumpkin butter features all the spices that taste like fall as well as spices that will amp up the flavor of a typical gin sour.
