The Story Behind The Caribbean Old Fashioned

I love the awesome forwardness of a classic Old Fashioned. You can use different base spirits and amplify them with different bitters and flavors. With my Southern roots, I of course love making a bourbon Old Fashioned, but lately I have been experimenting with other spirits, like rum. What’s tricky with rum is some bottles can make the cocktail a bit sweet for my liking. Here, I use two types of rum —a white and dark — to balance the sweetness.

Tropical bitters are phenomenal in tiki cocktails, but I thought they might also shine here. I love how you taste the light citrus notes alongside mango and passion fruit. It’s like a ticket straight to the Caribbean.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce white rum
  • 1 ounce aged rum
  • ½ ounce demerara syrup
  • 3 dashes tropical bitters, such as Mister Bitters Sweet & Sour

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Stir to chill and combine.
  3. Strain into a rocks glass over an ice sphere, or regular cubed ice.
  4. Garnish & enjoy!
