There’s no denying hard seltzer has quickly become a go-to drink for many Americans — especially during the sweltering summer months.

The sparkling, low-cal, low-ABV drink is available in a wide variety of refreshing flavors emulating non-alcoholic seltzers like La Croix and Spindrift. During the early rise of the category, key players included White Claw, Truly, and Bon & Viv (now rebranded as Bon V!V), which accounted for between 80 and 90 percent of sales last year. Nowadays, everyone from big corporate brands to smaller craft breweries is entering the spiked seltzer game.

In 2019, U.S. drinkers bought 2.1 billion 355-milliliter cans of the boozy seltzer, making the sales, by volume, greater than the sales of vodka for the same year. One thing’s for sure: People love hard seltzer. But just how popular has the drink become in the U.S.? And, more importantly, which states boast the most loyal hard seltzer drinkers?

The best way to answer that question is by tallying the number of consumers who not only drink hard seltzer at home, but also when they’re visiting bars and restaurants. In April, consumer insights firm Nielsen CGA did just that.

Following a survey of 15,000 consumers nationwide, Nielsen found that 11 percent of respondents typically order hard seltzer when visiting on-premise locations. The survey also showed that hard seltzer’s popularity remains almost uniform across the nation. The Mid-Atlantic, New England, and West South Central regions lead the way in terms of popularity — but only slightly. Twelve percent of those surveyed in these regions claimed to drink hard seltzer in bars and restaurants, while the same was true for just 9 percent in the East South Central region — the lowest in the country.
