Pappy Van Winkle is a cult phenomenon. There’s no denying that. Getting your hands on some Pappy is difficult whether it’s the 10 Year, 15 Year, 20 Year, 23 Year, or Special Reserve. A new Kentucky law might make Pappy a little easier to find, but if you’re in a city like New York, the struggle is real — especially if you’re looking for a whole bottle and not just a $145, 2-ounce pour.

Thankfully, the folks at Pappy want to help anyone on the hunt for a bottle. On the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery website, a list of the stores that could receive an allocation of Pappy are mapped out based on the location that you enter. The key words here are “help” and “could,” and theres a big caveat to the map: “Because we don’t control which retailers receive our stock, we can’t track inventory at a retailer level,” the website reads.

“The stores on our site are our best guess as to where some product might go,” Preston Van Winkle tells VinePair over the phone. “It’s ultimately up to the wholesaler in each market to determine which stores receive stock. Those are ones that we know got it in the past, but it’s by no stretch comprehensive.”

Van Winkle also mentioned that the stores listed aren’t known for “price gouging.” Most of those stores are probably sold out, though, as locations can sell out within minutes of receiving allocation, Van Winkle says.

“Who gets product is out of our control and almost out of the wholesalers control too” thanks to distribution laws in New York, Van Winkle says.
But you’ve got to start somewhere if you’re on the hunt for a bottle. Here are some stores to get you started on your Pappy Van Winkle search in New York City.
