Riesling

Smith-Madrone Riesling 2015 Review

Riesling is probably not the first grape to come to mind when you think of Napa Valley, but if you tasted this dry, racy, flavor-packed wine without knowing that Napa is a mecca for Cabernet and Chard, you’d probably conclude that Napa is a world-class Riesling region. While that’s not the case, Smith-Madrone’s Riesling is reliably one of the best Rieslings made in the United States. Produced since 1977, each vintage is consistent in quality but somewhat different in character. The 2015 vintage is bone-dry, bright, and crisp, with aromas of almond blossom, lemon, and a hint of petrol. Flavors include white peach, Bartlett pear, Meyer lemon, and a hint of blood orange. The texture is rich but clean, and has a very long finish. If you like Rieslings from Austria, this will be right up your alley.
