Binomio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva 2013
Review
Most bottlings of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo available in export markets are simple, fresh wines meant to be consumed in their youth. There are also notable Riserva wines, like those made by Valentini and Emidio Pepe, which cost hundreds of dollars and can age for decades. Binomio's Riserva is structured and complex, but also fresh and accessible in its youth, making it a great middle-ground between these two styles. It's very dark in color, with aromas that include blackberries, fresh plums, black olives, and spices. There is noticeable oak on the palate (it's aged in French barriques), but this integrates after the wine is decanted or left open for an hour or so. The texture is smooth and spice-driven, with a long finish and flavors of black olive tapanade. If you enjoy bold, structured wines, or are a fan of everyday-price Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and looking to upgrade, this is a bottle to try.
