Livio Felluga Picolit Colli Orientali del Friuli DOCG 2011
Review
Picolit is named for its inability to fully pollinate, forming only small (piccolo) bunches of concentrated white grapes and is therefore, in Friuli, designated to only passito-style wines. Wines made from Picolit are considered vino da meditazione, wines not for food but to drink and contemplate, due to their complexity. And Livio Felluga knows how to coax out said complexity so well. Peach, apricot, white flowers and orange blossom honey are just the beginning as ginger, tea, and a hint of maple syrup come around the corner to say hi along with just the right amount of vanilla; actually vanilla ice cream would be more like it. The price is high for so little, but so much is packed into 375 ml it’s so worth it to experience this wine.
