Lakefront Brewery Clean Machine Brut IPA
Review
Clean Machine colors outside the lines. Boldly bitter for a brut IPA, a nascent style we've come to know for its candy aromas, sparkling effervescence, and bone-dry finish, this drinks more like a West Coast IPA in a session IPA's clothing. (It is, by the way, a sneaky 6.8 percent ABV; a reality that sets in about halfway through.) Its hops, allegedly late additions of Lemondrop, Cascade, and Mandarina Bavaria, present more like bitter herbs than tropical fruits, but it's bright, bitter, and pithy, with an ultra-crisp body and carbonation that's spritzy as seltzer. A lingering layer of botanical bitterness is not unlike that of an aperitif; drink before dinner, and follow with a sweeter IPA to balance out the grapefruit and orange pith.
