The Story Behind The Yuzu Shiso Margarita

The prettiest 1970s luau this side of the Hudson River is at Bar Gonzo, a vibrant bar and restaurant opened on an otherwise unremarkable midtown Manhattan block in November 2017. Named in homage to Hunter S. Thompson, the space features zigzag tiled flooring, potted plants, stained glass, and an Instagram-ready peacock sculpture behind the bar.

Cocktail consultant Tim Cooper, of Manhattan’s Sweetwater Social and Goldbar, created the drinks list, including this bright, bracing twist on a Margarita. Made with yuzu juice and tequila, and garnished with shiso leaves, it’s a perfectly tropical antidote to grim, wintry days (and nights).

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces Tequila Cabeza
  • 1 ounce yuzu juice
  • ½ ounce agave nectar
  • 2 shiso leaves

Directions

  1. Shake tequila, yuzu juice and agave nectar to combine.
  2. Pour into a double rocks glass.
  3. Garnish with shiso leaf.
