The Story Behind The Strawberry Basil Moscow Mule

Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend, and what better way to impress mom than making her a fantastic cocktail? A couple of weeks ago, when my own mother was visiting me in Seattle for her birthday, we went to my local neighborhood bar to celebrate with a round of fun libations. To be frank, my mom isn’t a big drinker, but she did want to try something fun and interesting. I suggested the Moscow Mule and she fell in love. The Moscow Mule is a great Mother’s Day cocktail, because it’s so simple to make. You can make mom happy and you won’t be stuck in the kitchen all afternoon fussing over drinks. This way, you two can actually enjoy some quality time together, cocktails in hand.

This Moscow Mule variation incorporates sweet strawberries, aromatic basil, and a touch of lemon to give it a warm weather spin. In addition to the unique, sweet and spiced taste, what’s also great about this drink is that you can also make a good portion of it ahead of time. Just combine the vodka, strawberry, and basil together and keep the mixture chilling in the fridge. When you’re ready to serve up your drinks, simply add the ginger beer. At bars, the classic Moscow Mule is served in a traditional copper cup, but I decided to shake up tradition by serving this version in an elegant, classy glass.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 Ounces Vodka
  • ½ Lemon, Juiced
  • ½ Teaspoon Agave Nectar
  • 5 Ounces Ginger Beer
  • 3 Basil Leaves, Chopped
  • 4 Strawberries, Sliced

Directions

  1. In a cocktail shaker add vodka, lemon juice, sliced strawberries, chopped basil, agave nectar, and 1 cup of ice.
  2. Shake until mixed and chilled.
  3. Add ice to serving glass, then strain the mixture into serving glass and top off with ginger beer.
  4. Garnish with sliced strawberries and basil sprig. Cheers!
