The Story Behind The Mandarin Bramble

A traditional Bramble cocktail combines gin with fresh citrus, simple syrup, and a drizzle of blackberry liqueur. It was invented by London barman Dick Bradsell in 1984; and, like all good classics, lends itself beautifully to riffs and reinvention.

Since it’s been so hot lately, I decided to make a refreshing spin on a Bramble using fresh mandarins I found at the market. I went with white rum instead of gin and substituted pomegranate syrup (you could also use grenadine) for the berry liqueur.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces white rum
  • 2 ounces fresh-squeezed mandarin juice
  • 1 ounce lemon juice
  • 1 ounce pomegranate syrup, such as Monin

Directions

  1. Combine rum, mandarin juice, and lemon juice in a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Shake to chill and combine.
  3. Strain ingredients into a large cocktail glass over fresh crushed ice.
  4. Slowly pour pomegranate syrup down the side of the cocktail.
