The Story Behind The Bitter Lover

The most popular drink in any bar you can find in Argentina is a Fernet and Cola. The culture here absolutely thrives on the stuff. But as much as I can enjoy some good Fernet in my cocktail, after a few of these, I needed to mix it up. Still, I wanted to immerse myself entirely in the culture. So I asked what else they drink here, and a bartender whipped up another concoction I had noticed a lot: a Cynar Julep. Here, the julep is made with orange juice and lime. I decided to make my own variation on this drink.

Enter, the Bitter Lover, a cocktail with sweet, rich notes of caramel and earthy yet bitter tones on the back end from the tequila and Cynar. Everything in this cocktail comes together so well and it really is an experience that evolves with each sip.

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce tequila
  • 1 ounce Cynar
  • 1 ounce orange juice
  • ½ ounce cane sugar

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice
  2. Shake hard to chill and combine
