Another day, another daydream about sleeping in a wine barrel. This time, it’s in Douro, Portugal, where guests of the Quinta da Pacheca Estate are invited to stay in giant wine barrels in the middle of a 116-year-old vineyard.
The vineyard sits on a 280-year-old estate owned by Paulo Pereira and Maria do Céu Gonçalves. On-site accommodations include 270-square-foot rooms that are giant replicas of wine barrels used in the estate, which includes 15 wine-making rooms, Metro reports.
The cavernous barrels include a private bathroom with a walk-in shower, a “large, round bed,” a skylight, and a terrace. They even have air conditioning and WiFi, Metro reports.
Amenities also include wine, of course, with bottles of red, white, rosé, and port available in a nearby house dating to the 18th century. Samples of locally made olive oil and jam are also available, and a restaurant offering local cuisine is on the property as well.
Although certainly a special experience, Quinta da Pacheca is not the first to offer giant wine barrel rooms to sleep in. As VinePair reported last week, a small winery in Sasbachwalden, Germany offers visitors the chance to sleep among the vines at Schlafen im Weinfass, with eight giant wine barrels on site. A VRBO listing in Washington State also offers a wine barrel room on site, and in Porto, Portugal, the Yeatman Hotel invites guests to stay in rooms with wine barrel-enclosed beds.
Agave spirit aficionados will be happy to know that at the Matices Hotel de Barricas in Jalisco, Mexico, guests can stay overnight in giant wooden barrels akin to those used to age tequila.
