In Northern California, wine country and weed country occupy much of the same territory, despite being separate industries — till now. This January, Rebel Coast Winery, based in Sonoma, will release a weed-infused wine. It won’t get you crossfaded though: the sauvignon blanc contains THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis, but is alcohol free.
Unlike other wines, this vintage will be released in cannabis dispensaries, rather than wineries, in early 2018 with the launch of the state’s legal cannabis market. With only four milligrams of THC per glass, the wine offers a standard “microdose” for a mild psychoactive effect.
“We wanted to excite the rebellious spirit in Americans through innovation, so we took two world-class California products — marijuana and wine — and created a proprietary process that resulted in a delicious, crisp and elegantly crafted Sauvignon Blanc that’s teed up to be a game changer for the wine and cannabis industries,” says Rebel Coast Co-founder and CEO Chip Forsythe.
California consumers 21 and over can pre-order the $59.99 bottle of wine on Rebel Coast’s website and receive it in early 2018. The wine will also be available in more than 500 dispensaries across California. Just don’t expect to find the wine in the same place where you’d by alcohol: under state law, booze and bud cannot be sold in the same place.
In addition to the sauvignon blanc, Rebel Coast is planning to release a cannabis-infused rosé and sparkling, as well as CBD-infused wines that carry the medicinal benefits of cannabis without the psychoactive effect.
The goal of the wine is to “get giggly and naked with someone,” according to Rebel Coast’s website. The idea is to mimic the experience you’d get with a few glasses of a traditional wine: not to get knocked out, but to enjoy a warm, happy buzz.
