With shelter-in-place orders upending the hospitality industry, bars and restaurants around the country are fighting to find ways to pay their staff. For one Georgia bar owner, the solution was stapled to the walls.

For over a decade, customers of Tybee Island’s Sand Bar have signed and stapled dollar bills to the walls as a memento of their visit. After owner Jennifer Knox was forced to shutter the bar due to lack of business, she realized the bar’s unusual décor offered an opportunity to give back to her former employees.

“There’s money on the walls and we have time on our hands,” Knox told CNN.

Knox and five other volunteers worked for over three days carefully removing, cleaning, and counting the dollar bills. In total, they collected $3,714 from the walls, with additional donations from customers bringing the total to $4,104, which was then distributed to the bar’s now-unemployed staff.

While not all bars are lucky enough to be wallpapered in money, it surely came as welcome relief to the former employees of Sand Bar. Knox has since repainted the bar’s walls to welcome customers when the stay-at-home order is finally lifted. In the meantime, she is asking for further donations to help her staff.

“We all look out for each other,” Knox said. “We are all in this together.”
