As winter closes in, we can all agree that a refreshing beer on the beach would be pretty good right about now. But one thing that could easily turn this tropical fantasy into a nightmare is a six-pack ring washing up on the beach from a sea of plastic waste.

Corona, in an aim to help reduce ocean pollution, is playing its part by piloting 100 percent plastic-free six-pack rings. As reported by Packaging Gateway, the Mexican beer brand is collaborating with Parley for the Oceans to introduce biodegradable six-pack rings, made using plant-based fibers.

The eco-friendly packaging will be introduced in select markets at the beginning of next year, starting with Tulum, Mexico.

“The beach is an important part of Corona’s DNA and we have been working with Parley to address the issue on the frontlines where plastic is physically accumulating,” Evan Ellman, Corona Better World Director, said in a press release. “We also recognize the influence a global brand like Corona can have on the industry, and with the support of Parley, are pursuing scalable solutions like plastic-free six-pack rings that can become a new standard to avoid plastic for good.”

Corona isn’t the only environmentally-conscious beer brand. In September, Carlsberg announced the launch of the Snap Pack, a sustainable form of packaging that could reduce the company’s plastic use by as much as 76 percent.

While Big Beer might not always be a leader in beer trends, this is definitely one we can get behind.
