Should I tip at a wedding?
As a former cater-waiter and bartender myself, I would have loved to receive wedding tips. But at the risk of being screamed at by my brethren, this is not something you need to do. At most weddings a tip of at least 15 to 20 percent is added to the bill to whomever is paying for the event. In fact, Emily Post says tipping at a wedding is actually bad etiquette. Pulling money from your pocket to pay staff is bad manners. You’re the guest.
The only time you should tip is if the hosts have a cash bar. But who wants to go to a wedding with a cash bar?
Is mezcal a kind of tequila?
This is going to be confusing. Hear me out: All tequila is mezcal, but not all mezcal is tequila. Mezcal is defined as any agave based spirit, and this includes tequila.
There are more than 200 varieties of agave. Mezcal can be made from about 30 of them. Tequila is only tequila if it is made from one specific type, 100 percent blue agave. Tequila can also only be made in Jalisco and a few other municipalities.
If I order a cocktail and the bartender has no idea how to make it, should I try to explain it or just cut my losses?
I can see how you would want to explain to the bartender how to make your drink, especially if it’s something basic like a Negroni, but this can be a dick move. I’d caution against showing your bartender how to make a drink. It’s just not cool. And it’s really not cool if the drink you want is obscure.
If they can’t make what you want, order a straight spirit or a beer, or just simply leave and head somewhere else.
