A family born into winemakers, Jean-Louis Saget started Saget La Perrière with a stacked team of specialists to produce some amazing wine. This once simple, family project is now a major staple of France’s Loire Valley, showcasing the terroir and diversity across their 890 acres of vineyards.
Now, it’s up to his two sons, Arnaud and Laurent, to lead the charge for the next generation of Saget La Perrière — all while maintaining the spirit which has made the brand what it is today.
We caught up with 9th generation winemaker and Saget La Perrière general manager, Arnaud Saget, to learn what a winemaker’s death-row wine would be and why he can’t stomach an iconic brunch cocktail.
1. What’s your desert island wine?
It would be our iconic “Mégalithe” from La Perrière. It’s a white Sancerre that can age for years but will always give you its best whenever you decide to open it!
2. What was your first drink?
It was wine for sure! I’m hesitating between Pouilly Fumé and Coteaux du Layon.
3. Date, Marry, Ghost: Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc
Date – Sauvignon Blanc because of its very seductive aromas! Marry – Chenin Blanc because of its ability to surprise you over time. Ghost – Even though I love a good Cabernet Franc every now and then, I would ghost it because of its inconsistency of vintages.
4. You’re on death row, what’s your last supper wine?
Bubbles! Either a glass (or a bottle!) of Champagne. If not available, a good Crémant de Loire would be a fantastic option!
5. You can only drink at one bar for the rest of your life. What is it?
The Skylark in Midtown Manhattan. It has a beautiful rooftop bar and a great selection of wines and cocktails.
6. What’s the best and worst bottle of wine in your cellar right now?
The best bottle I guess is a Chateau Pavie 1983, my birth year! The worst unfortunately became the worst because I didn’t drink it early enough, it is an old Gewürztraminer from Alsace.
7. What drink will you never order again?
A Bloody Mary! I over indulged one day and that was the end for me.
